This year marks the 21st annual Russian Festival 2009 at the Russian Center of San Francisco. The Russian Center was established in 1939 and will also be celebrating it's 70th anniversary this year. Each year, the festival brings to San Francisco and the Bay Area, the best of Russian culture, food and entertainment. It has been voted by-far, the biggest event of the Russian American community and the best opportunity to "visit Russia, without leaving the Bay Area". With it's exciting program of entertainment in colorful costumes, including
musicians, dancers, singers & entertainers, featuring the popular Russian folk ensemble, "Limpopo" from Los Angeles (originally from Russia), the "Firebird" Dance Ensemble; Russian Center Dancers, and Olga Prokoshina; Gregory Krumik, Russian bayan virtuoso; Diana Gutkina, bayan. Soloists: Svetlana Nikitenko, Courtney Mark, Susanna Tchubarian, Ivana Taratula, Elena Stepanova, Nikolai Massenkoff and others, plus Vladimir Riazantsev, honor artist of Russia, special mystery guest - The Magician, Teremok, Lysaya Dance School, the Russian Dance Group from Reno and others.
The Russian Festival will also provide you with a chance to taste all of the authentic traditional food of the Russian cuisine - including piroshki, borscht, pelmeni, beef stroganoff, golubtsi and especially the infamous "blini" with caviar, herring, salmon, in celebration of "Maslinitsa". The festival is noted for it's wide assortment of Russian flavored vodka - rather doubt that anywhere else will you have an opportunity to taste so many different flavors (make certain that you find a designated driver before you attempt this feat) - and of course, try the Russian beer and your other favorite libations, as well as traditional Russian desserts and teas at the samovar booth. You'll have a wonderful opportunity to visit the different vendors selling Russian arts & crafts, jeweler y, books, souvenirs, and visit the art gallery featuring Russian international and local artists. Friday night, following opening ceremonies and entertainment by some of the artists, will be disco night with DJ Nick and Limpopo. Saturday and Sunday, as the festival continues, make certain you visit the Museum of Russian Culture and the Library.
