Yen for Shopping (or Shopping for Yen)
Submitted by Jake Berzon on Wed, 2008-04-30 20:46.In a continuing theme of diversify my cash holdings into currencies other than the $US, I used the opportunity of Yen correcting about 8% over the past 2 weeks to buy into FXY at $95.39. FXY, a CurrencyShares Yen Trust, is the easiest, lowest cost and most liquid instrument that I know of for virtually converting $US into Japanese Yen. FXY has current support at around $95 per trust share.
Canadian Geese, Ducks and Loonies
Submitted by Jake Berzon on Thu, 2008-03-20 02:56.FXC is a CurrencyShares Canadian Dollar Trust. Simply said, it is a convenient vehicle for those of us in the US for holding funds and collecting interest on them in Canadian Dollars (Loonies). It is far more convenient and less expensive (for reasonably small amounts) than the alternative of converting the funds, depositing them at a Canadian bank and than withdrawing and converting them back. Today was an interesting day in the markets, as many commodities and related companies' stocks took a bigger tumble than the market as a whole.

Daily Portfolio Relative Volatility (DPRV)
Submitted by Jake Berzon on Wed, 2008-01-30 02:43.I have searched far and wide for a good definition of portfolio historical relative volatility. I started by looking at the standard mathematical definition of volatility and proceeded to research and analyze Beta, modified Sharpe, Sortino and Treynor ratios and the daily historical volatility that they measure for various mutual funds. After playing around with these and several other definitions from Modern and Post Modern Portfolio Theories I came to the realization that none of these measures, no matter how sophisticated and computationally intensive, gave me what I was really after.

Fortune's Best stocks for 2008
Submitted by Jake Berzon on Sun, 2008-01-06 22:08.I was talking to a friend a few days ago and he mentioned that CNN Money had just published Fortune Magazine's list of the best stock picks for 2008. He asked what my thoughts were, so I took a quick look at the list and jotted down my immediate responses, which I forwarded to him. Perhaps others could also benefit at looking at the other side of the coin for many of the Fortune list's companies. Please keep in mind that I did not do in depth research on any of these stocks and that such research would be warranted before making any actual buy and sell decisions.

Great stock buying opportunity
Submitted by Jake Berzon on Thu, 2007-08-16 17:26.As you are no doubt watching the market drop with apparently no bottom in sight, keep in mind that there actually is a bottom and that real values are finally starting to appear in the market. Get ready to pick up stocks in the Energy and Utilities sector, as well as some foreign closed end funds over the next week, as these sectors get oversold.
Large log file caused the site to go down
Submitted by Jake Berzon on Sat, 2007-07-28 00:05.Odesskiy Listok site went down last night for no apparent reason. No software or operating system upgrades were performed that could have potentially caused this failure. Hardware was also fully functional. After a rather long investigation, we discovered that the cause of this problem was Clean URLs, which suddenly stopped working. Instead of redirecting, as they should have and did before, they were causing "The page cannot be displayed" (Cannot find server or DNS Error) error messages to be displayed in Internet Explorer and blank pages in Firefox browser.
