Studio Theater Games (director Masha Farber) will perform three one-act plays for adults as a fundraiser benefiting young playwrights.
Letter from the Director:
Some time ago, I set off to find a play about Jewish teens and their life, struggle, and search for meaning.
I found nothing. It was a surprise. It seemed that in this country, where the Jewish tribe is so established, and theater is even more established, there ought to be many plays, just as there are many pieces of art, in other forms, that reflect the Jewish being.
Meanwhile, I found playwrights who were willing to deliver such a play, and I decided to commission one. It would be a play that I could stage with my TheaterGames students and perhaps with some adults.
Of course, I need to pay for the commission. The amount is significant, beyond the means of our studio, and so what better way to raise funds than by staging a show! On December 19 and 20, at the Dragon Theatre in Palo Alto (535 Alma Street, Palo Alto), we will perform three one-acts under the title “Teatral’naya Ploschad’, 6 m2” (“Theatre Place, 6 m2”):
“Botticelli” by Terrence McNally (performed in English),
“Gametes Unite” by Leah Halper (translated to Russian specifically for this event with the kind permission of the author), and
“On the Love for Etching,” a dramatization of a short story by Edward Radzinsky (staged in Russian, in the form known as “Word for Word”).
Those of you who have previously attended (thank you!) our previous fundraising events (which benefited the studio and the JCCs of Palo Alto and St. Petersburg) will recognize some of the cast from "School of Moliere" (2006) and "Full Frontal Nudity" (2008). These familiar faces will be joined by former students and friends, old and new.
I invite you to come enjoy the show “Teatral’naya Ploschad’, 6 m2” and support the future of youth theater.
Tickets are $50. All proceeds, after production costs, will be used to pay for the commissioned play. Direct contributions are also welcome.
