In his September 1st column titled "Five Blue Chips," which was posted today on Forbes.Com, Ken Fisher admits that we have been in a bear market since November 2007 and that he did not anticipate the fall. I quote: "The stock market's drop since last November is enough to qualify it as a bear market... Wrongly, I've been upbeat throughout... This is the first time I haven't anticipated the fall... I hate that... I also admit confusion."

In late December of 2007, my sister signed up with Fisher Investments. She gave them almost $700,000. They began buying stocks in January, 2008. Now her stock portfolio is worth $615,000. Her previous portfolio contained many long held assets that were inherited, so when she cashed out, she incurred sizable capital gains to pay to boot. Oh, and my sister is retired and not otherwise wealthy ... single, a small house, on social security, with no pension, etc. But she did inherit this bungle of stocks and bonds.

EnCana (ECA) is basically a Canadian natural gas producer with large holdings of oil sands in Alberta, Canada. They also have a large US operation and an integrated oil business with Conoco Phillips (COP). On Sunday, May 11, 2008, ECA announced their plans to split the company into two parts - pure play natural gas company and an separate oil company. Wall Street went ecstatic over the announcement and the stock immediately ascended to a new 52 week high on Monday. Anybody who is a somebody in the world of money wrote an article on EnCana, and the buzz, well, it buzzed!

In a continuing theme of diversify my cash holdings into currencies other than the $US, I used the opportunity of Yen correcting about 8% over the past 2 weeks to buy into FXY at $95.39. FXY, a CurrencyShares Yen Trust, is the easiest, lowest cost and most liquid instrument that I know of for virtually converting $US into Japanese Yen. FXY has current support at around $95 per trust share.
